Experience “Keswick 2006” for Yourself What is the “Keswick Convention”? It’s an annual event that has been taking place since 1875. It offers something for everyone: life-changing Bible-teaching, uplifting worship, and great fellowship, combined with a chance to relax and enjoy a holiday in the setting of the magnificent Lake District . The title for this year’s Convention, to be held during the three weeks 15 th July – 4 th August, is “The Church in the Power of the Spirit”. The Bible readings for the first week’s morning sessions will be led by Chris Wright on The Spirit in the Old Testament, and those for the second week are to be on Ephesians and will be led by Ajith Fernando from Sri Lanka . This second week offers a programme suitable for families, as well as sessions of special interest for 20-30-year olds with K2 , a time that we’re told will be Reflective, Interactive and Proactive. The Bible readings for the final week, 29 th July to 4 th August, will be from 1 John, to be led by Nigel Lee. Each week there will be special sessions for kids and young adults on how to get to know God better. There will be many other well-known speakers.
Some frequently asked questions are: Do I need to register? Answer - NO and there’s NO fee to attend, although you’re asked for a prayerful donation. What about accommodation? Answer - You will need to book your own; there are plenty of guest houses, hotels, self-catering cottages and campsites, but the Lake District does get booked up very early, so hurry! Keswick Tourist Board is useful for information. Are you interested? Want to know a bit more? Ask Joan Pantling. Walk Thru the Old Testament The following sessions saw us rattling through the other thirty-eight books of the Old Testament: historical, poetic and prophetic, at a great pace. We listened to the stories, saw how it all fitted together, began to understand something of the political upheaval in the land, and how Israel struggled with themselves and other nations. The whole church became a map of the Holy Land and we placed the prophets around the map allowing us to see where they were when they were speaking to the nations. Using simple actions as a way of remembering details, we groomed the long hair of the prophetess Deborah and plucked the fleas from our bodies. Will we ever forget that the story of King Saul is found in One Sand Mule, and King David in Two Sand Mules – corny, but it worked! We learned about the invasions – Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians. George Redgrave worked so hard and kept us on our toes. In the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity it was indeed an ecumenical event with folk from various churches coming together and enjoying the experience. A huge thank-you goes to George for his leadership and to Joan Panting for all her hard work on the day, organising refreshments, sorting out bookings and surprising us with a choice of lovely soups and crisps, the former carefully prepared by Gwenda Hill. A number of books relating to the seminar remain in the office and anyone who is interested in looking at them should contact Joan. It’s not something we will repeat in a hurry, but Revd Femi Cole-Njie says they are considering doing the Walk Thru the New Testament at Leytonstone High Road Methodist church, so watch out for more details.
