Quiz Night - Saturday 25th February 2006

Once again our recent Quiz Night provided a fascinating insight into the heights (and depths) of intellectual and cultural attainment here at LUFC. Bob and Joy Park offered us rounds and rounds of entertainment as we struggled to ‘date that tune’ (by decade), decide exactly who did ‘write that poem’ (rather than the one who really should have written it but didn’t) and scanned our recollections of biblical tales for names that only a few people knew and still fewer could spell.

A really challenging round, for me personally, consisted of mathematical and logical problems. To accomplish the questions in this round I would have needed (and had unaccountably not brought with me) a sheaf of graph paper, a calculator, slide rule and Stephen Hawkins’s phone number on my speed dial. Fortunately, my team-mates were not as incapable of rational thought, and we did produce some answers. Younger members of the teams were happy to supply an answer as to the identity of the ‘Half-Blood Prince’ for those older members who are not addicted to Harry Potter stories, or who Mr and Mrs Beaver said what the "true king of Narnia".

I am also sure that all our readers would be gratified to learn that very few people knew the name for Irish moonshine whiskey (poteen). The shared supper was a marvellous spread, with dishes to suit all tastes and enough snacks left to supplement Sunday’s after-service refreshments. The winners were gracious enough to share their prize with any of the losers who still had room for a chocolate doughnut. Many thanks to Bob and Joy for organising this great evening.
